I am the SAME as a man carrying a gun on the subway. Are you?

One of the New Yorker’s biggest annoyances is being on a train that is “stopped because of train traffic ahead of us,”  ” a sick passenger on the train,” or “due to a police investigation.” Earlier today I was on such a train. Not only was I on the train, but I was in the actual car that the “police investigation” was taking place.  This is a rarity, as most New Yorkers probably think a stopped train is just a game MTA employees like to play. A man who was supposedly carrying a gun (this could be true or not, as I did not see said gun) was all of a sudden taken over by two undercover policemen. There was a short scuffle, but overall the man did not resist too much. The policemen held the man uncomfortably pinned against the train, until about 10 minutes or so later, 6 uniformed policemen came to take the perpetrator away.

We were in a station, and I was only 1 stop away from where I was getting out anyway, but it was raining, and I already had to do my daily trek from 2nd and Houston to Union Square to deliver cookies, so I stayed put. Surprisingly everyone on the train remained calm, and minded their own business for the most part; no one complained about being late for where ever it was they were going – almost as if they see this on a regular basis. But it is not something you see on a regular basis, or at least I don’t. Maybe I am living in my own personal yoga bubble, but even though you hear about these things, and even know that they are happening every day, it is easy to forget or ignore.

I happened to have run into a fellow yogi and friend while on the train, and we were sitting together when this happened. I think we both had a similar reaction, where we personally felt hurt and a bit saddened by the situation. At one point I almost teared up, but it was not because I felt bad for the guy, or felt that I was in danger in any way. It was because the guy who was arrested and I are the same. The policemen and I are the same. Everyone who was on that train with me, we are all the same. I don’t necessarily think it was a good idea for that guy to be carrying around a gun, or even to own a gun (and this post is not meant to bring up conversation about gun control, that is a whole other conversation I’d rather not get into.) And I don’t know how I feel about undercover policemen hanging out on my train. But the only reason to carry a gun is to in some way protect yourself and I am sure we have all at some point felt like we needed to protect ourselves. And the policemen were just trying to protect those of us on the train. I am sure all of us at some point in our lives felt like we had to protect someone else. But until everyone on this earth realizes that we are all the same – humans, animals, trees, we are all the same – then we will all be living in a state of dis-ease. “Some guy” did not get arrested on the train today. Part of me was arrested too.

Cookies, Sutras, and the Magic of Chanting

“Linguistically and vibrationally it expresses our deepest core.  The elegant sounds of Sanskrit gently coax our hearts to soar to their highest potential, the luminous whole that we all are.”

~ Manorama

As I briefly spoke about in my last post about the power of om, Sanskrit is a vibrational language that you can feel in every ounce of your body. When speaking Sanskrit words out loud, or especially when chanting them, there is a potency that taps into the core essence of the universe. Because of this, it is said that even if you don’t know the meaning of the words you are chanting, you still get all of the benefit of saying them.

Exactly 3 months ago I started memorizing the first chapter of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, Samadhih Padah, and today (the timing is completely unintentional…) I finished my goal…2 1/2 weeks ahead of schedule! (And although I just stated that even if you don’t know what it means, you get the benefit, I do know what some of it means, and I read it in English too!!)

Some say (i.e. Tamar) that my cookies taste so good because I chant sutras while I am making them. Well, here you go – as promised, attached is a video of me chanting the entire first chapter…while baking. If you want to order some of these magic cookies, you can do so here.

I’ve also posted the first chapter here, so you can chant with me 🙂

The Power of Om

omOm

“It is also called nadam because it is the supreme music present everywhere eternally…The entire universe is penetrated by this supreme music. In an individual it is manifested as a ringing sound in one’s head. By meditating on it, yogins feel increase in intensity and volume and ultimately they realize that the entire universe is vibrating in nadam.” (Jivamukti FoM, June 2000)

Om (pronounced AHH-OOO-MMM), when chanted, vibrates throughout your body, starting in your abdomen, moving through your heart, and then finally into your skull. Om was the first sound that was, when the world was created, and it resonates in all that surrounds us. It is universal. It is boundless joy. We are “om.”

In the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, it is referred to as pranava, ever renewing, and each time it is said, you are renewed, “brought into alignment again.” When you chant om, you are connected to everything and anything that is part of this earth.

This past weekend, a fundraiser was held at Jivamukti to raise money to help send me to teacher training in April. The Jivamukti teacher training costs a small fortune, and although I’d received a partial scholarship already, I still need to come up with the rest of the money somehow.  I was nervous about how the class would go, and even a bit embarrassed that it was for me. After planning the event for 4 months, I wanted to run and hide. Why should all these people care about sending me to teacher training? What makes me so special?

More and more people kept piling into the room, totaling about 50. And as we started to om, I felt something move inside me. A resonating sound that filled my body with joy, and almost made me a bit teary-eyed. Not because they were all there for me. They weren’t there for me. All these people were in the room because of their love of yoga. They were not there for the amazing teachers, the live music. They were in the room because of the sound of om. And I know they all felt it also. There was definitely a tingly vibration moving throughout the room, that got bigger and better with each round we chanted. And then I knew it was ok for me to be in the room. Because I am “om.”

If you’d like to learn more about my fundraising efforts, or just read more about everything I’ve been doing to prepare myself for TT, you can do so here http://www.gofundme.com/1krdz8. I might even post a video of me chanting sutras while baking one day 😉

Vive La France!

For January’s food swap, we have a French theme – recreating a french dish in a veg friendly way. My category was vegetables, and while I thought I was going to have a difficult time coming up with a dish and cookie for 8 with all this cookie madness I have going on, I found a quick and simple, yet super yummy dish in my new favorite cookbook, Vegan Eats World.

So without further ado…

Red Wine Braised Leeks and Mushrooms Red Wine Braised Leeks and Mushrooms

1 pound leeks

10 oz cremini mushrooms, brushed clean and tough ends of stems cut off

3 tbsp olive oil

2 cups dry red wine

1 tsp dried marjoram

1/2 tsp salt, plus additional for sprinkling

4 sprigs fresh thyme, or 1/2 tsp dried

2 tbsp vegan margarine

a few twists of freshly ground pepper

1. Trip away most of the green stalks on the leeks, leaving about an inch near the white part.Slice away the tip of the root end, and slice each leek in half lengthwise. Slice again into sections about 2 1/2 inches long.

2. Slice the mushrooms into quarters. Over medium-high heat, sear the mushrooms in 1 tbsp of olive oil. Fry the mushrooms, stirring occasionally, until both sides are browned and mushrooms look juicy, about 4 minutes. Remove from pan and transfer to an oven-proof dish. Sprinkle the mushrooms with a pinch of sea salt, cover with foil, and put in oven set t 250 to keep warm.

3. Heat the remaining olive oil and brown the leeks for 2-3 minutes, Pour in the wine, sprinkle with marjoram and salt, and tuck the thyme sprigs in to the wine. Increase the heat and bring the wine to an active simmer and cover the pan. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes.

3. Uncover the pan, and using tongs, carefully lift the leeks and arrange on top of the mushrooms. Increase the heat to medium-high and bring the juices in the pan to a rapid simmer for 2 minutes, stirring occasionally. Reduce the heat to low and swirl the margarine in to the juices. Use a wire whisk to continuously stir the sauce until smooth and lightly thickened. Drizzle a bit of sauce over each serving of leeks and mushrooms and serve immediately.

December Food Swap – Hereditary Holidays!!!

For this month’s food swap, we were each supposed to make a traditional holiday dish from the country of our ancestry. My assignment was to cook a protein. Now while my ancestors from Austria were Jewish, I decided to go with a traditional Christmas meal. (To be honest, I’m kind of tired of potato latkes…)

While researching Austrian Christmas, I kept coming across fried carp as their traditional Christmas Eve dinner. I was not too keen on attempting a vegan fish meal, so decided to keep looking.  The next most popular Austrian holiday dish: wiener schnitzel. Most people think wiener schnitzel comes from Germany, but it is in fact Austrian. To go along with it, it seemed German potato salad was the best side dish, so to make it a bit more fun, healthy and colorful, I went with something else.

So…introducing:

Vegan Schnitzel and Roasted Sweet Potato Salad!

Roasted Sweet Potato Salad Vegan Schnitzel

Vegan Schnitzel

  • 5 tablespoons Olive Oil
  • 2 cups Soy Milk
  • 2 teaspoons Sea Salt
  • 1 teaspoons Pepper
  • 4 Tempeh Patties (4 ounces)
  • 2/3 cup Bread Crumbs unseasoned
  • 1/2 cup Organic Parsley chopped
  • Lemon slices to squeeze

Combine 2 tablespoons oil with the soy milk and half the salt and pepper. Marinate the tempeh in this mixture for 15 minutes.

Combine the bread crumbs with the remaining salt and pepper and mix well.

Remove the patties and dip in the bread crumbs until evenly coated on both sides.

Heat the remaining oil and sauté the patties 3 minutes per side until brown. Remove from heat, drain on paper towels, and serve.

Variation:

Preheat oven to 375°F and place coated tempeh on a lightly oiled baking sheet. Bake 20 minutes on each side.

Roasted Sweet Potato Salad

  • 3 large sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into 1-inch chunks
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 3 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
  • 2-1/2 tablespoons mango chutney
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 medium garlic clove, minced (about 1 teaspoon)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/2 cup dried cranberries
  • 1 cup chopped scallions, white and green parts
  • 1/2 cup sliced almonds, toasted

Preheat oven to 425°F. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil. Toss sweet potatoes with olive oil, salt, cumin, and ginger directly on baking sheet. Roast, stirring occasionally, until sweet potatoes are tender, about 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, combine vinegar, chutney, mustard, honey, garlic, and olive oil in a medium bowl and whisk to combine.

Let potatoes cool slightly, then toss them with the cranberries, scallions and chutney dressing. Transfer to serving platter and scatter almonds over top. Serve warm or room temperature.
